Anker Power Banks almost always come out on top in our powerbank reviews. They combine value, portability, quality and safety like no other. The Anker PowerCore series are their newest series line and are perceived as even better than the Anker Astro series. Today, we’ll be taking a look at the compact Anker PowerCore 5000 Power Bank.
Design and Portability
The smallest Powerbank we’ve seen yet is the Anker Astro E1. However, this Anker Powercore 5000 – while not exceptionally smaller – is cylinder shaped and therefore takes up less space when carrying it with you. It fits easily in your pocket or you can slide it in your back and its low weight of 4.8oz keeps it from being noticeable. With measurements of 4.25 x 1.3 x 1.3 inches it’s easily one the most compact powerbanks I’ve ever seen. It’s thicker than the Astro A2, but due to the cylinder shape is easier to carry around. It even comes with a nice travel pouch that keeps it from scratching when it’s in your bag.
It has a sleek black matte casing and feels very sturdy. It’s supposed to be a protective casing and is therefore quite resistant to impacts, like when dropping it on the floor. Anker does a lot of testing against impacts and the likes, so don’t be worried if you drop it every once in awhile. However, it’s not meant for severe impacts like throwing and huge forces like Zendure powerbanks are.
Features
The Anker PowerCore 5000 has one charge port with a maximum output of 2A. This means you can use it to charge just about any micro-USB supported device like smartphones, digital cameras, smartwatches and even tablets. Thanks to the PowerIQ technology the Anker PowerCore will detect the device you’re charging and find the ideal output current for it. This makes it charge as quickly as possible, and also makes sure your device won’t overcurrent and harm your battery. This is a great feature I really like seeing on powerbanks, and it’s nice to see it on such an inexpensive device too.
The Anker PowerCore 5000 is also equipped with other multiple safety protection features like surge protection, short circuit prevention overcharge and many more that all make sure you’ll never damage your device or the powerbank.
Power
The Anker PowerCore 5000 is not an immensely powered device, but has sufficient power for everyday users. It has 5000mAh which is enough to charge any smartphone at least once. It can even charge smaller smartphones like the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy S4 twice, but bigger devices like the iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy 9 only once. Thanks to the strong 2A output, you can even use it to charge tablets, and it charges devices pretty fast. It won’t charge your tablet to a full 100%, but can give most medium tablets about a 35-40% charge.
The Anker PowerCore 5000 also has an input of 2A, which means it recharges quite fast when it’s empty. If you use a 2A wall charger, it takes a mere 2 – 3 hours to fully charge the powerbank. Charging it with a normal wall charger or via PC or laptop takes twice as long though, but it’s still fairly quick.
Conclusion
I can’t really name one flaw of this power bank. The only thing worth mentioning is that it becomes pretty warm when charging big devices like tablets, but not exceptionally hot. The Anker PowerCore 5000 is an incredible powerbank for the money. It’s as portable as can be, reasonably powerful, quality built, and boasts multiple fail-safe protection features.
